Black Liquid Soap (Savon Noir)

Black liquid soap — often called Savon Noir — is a traditional plant-oil soap produced using the same cauldron process as Savon de Marseille, but finished in liquid form using potassium salts rather than sodium.

The result is a concentrated olive-oil soap that dissolves easily in warm water and is widely used throughout the home for cleaning, degreasing and washing.

Unlike many modern cleaning products, black soap contains no synthetic detergents. Its cleaning power comes simply from the natural properties of soap itself — the ability to dissolve grease, lift dirt and rinse cleanly with water.

  • Choosing a Black Liquid Soap

Black liquid soaps are traditionally produced using different vegetable oils, each giving the soap slightly different characteristics.

    Olive Oil

The most traditional Marseille-style black soap. Strong degreasing power and widely used for kitchens, surfaces and outdoor cleaning.

    Olive Oil & Lavender

The same olive-oil cleaning performance with the addition of natural lavender essential oil for a light herbal fragrance.

    Almond & Linseed Oils

A slightly milder black soap traditionally valued for floor washing and general household cleaning.

    Almond, Linseed & Lavender

A gentle household cleaning soap combining almond and linseed oils with lavender essential oil.

    Aleppo (Olive & Laurel Oils)

Inspired by the Aleppo soap tradition, combining olive oil with laurel oil for a distinctive herbal character.

  • The Power of Soap

Black soap cleans in the same way all traditional soaps do — by dissolving oils and lifting dirt so it can be rinsed away with water.

Because it is a concentrated vegetable-oil soap rather than a synthetic detergent, its effectiveness comes from the natural chemistry of soap itself.

Diluted in warm water it becomes a powerful but simple cleaning solution suitable for many surfaces throughout the home.

  • Fewer Products, Simpler Cleaning

For many households Savon Noir replaces a cupboard full of specialised cleaning products.

A small amount diluted in warm water can be used for everyday cleaning, while the concentrated soap can be applied directly to tackle grease, heavy dirt or stubborn stains.

This simplicity — one traditional soap used in many ways — is the reason black soap remains widely used in homes across France today.
