Laundry has been washed with soap for centuries.
Long before synthetic detergents were developed, clothes, linens and delicate textiles were cleaned using simple vegetable oil soaps that dissolved grease and dirt so they could rinse away naturally with water.
Soap flakes are produced by grating traditional soap bars — most often Savon de Marseille — into small pieces that dissolve easily in warm water to create a simple liquid laundry soap.
Because the formulation contains only saponified vegetable oils and minimal additives, soap flakes are widely valued for washing delicate fabrics, baby clothes and garments worn close to the skin.
Today they remain one of the most traditional and environmentally simple ways to wash laundry.
Certain essential oils are also traditionally used to help deter insects in wardrobes and linen cupboards, making fragranced soap flakes popular for storing clothing and household linens.
