Using Essential Oils to Repel Moths & Spiders

Cedar Oil is often used to repel bugs and insects, this oil is effective against moths, ants, ticks and moth larvae. Cedar balls are readily available to buy, just ensure you keep them fresh and replaced regularly.

Lavender is probably the other most recognised moth repellent for us in the UK, bringing with it a fragrance that many humans enjoy. It's an easy option to use.

We suggest using our Lavender 300g cube (made with Lavender and Lavendin essential oils) for a large wardrobe, or Lavender (essential oil )soap for smaller drawers.

Lesser known: Rosemary, Cinnamon, Bergamot & Patchouli Essential Oil

Patchouli Oil is an Eastern wonder where it has been used for hundreds of years to keep moths away from silks.

The aromatic woody scent of Rosemary is known to deter moths and mosquitos, more often combined with other fragrances, Rosemary alone is a great herb and oil to use if this is a scent that pleases you.

Bergamot Essential Oil, this has. a strong citrussy fragrance that is full of useful properties, including deterring moths. It's not know to have much effect on lavae, or in deterring spiders, however it does keep fully grown bugs away from places you would prefer them not to be!

Cinnamon Oil, is perhaps the least known of all these oils and one that is fantastic for keep spiders away. The intensity of the fragrance will repel spiders safely and without harming them.

So why do these essential oils appear in a feature from a soap company? Our range of Organic Goat's Milk Soap contain pure essential oils AND coconut oil. Coconut Oil doesn't repel any bug  as is, however, the fatty acids that make it up—lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid are proven to give strong repellency against blood-sucking insects such as mosquitos, flies and ticks, whilst also hampering their ability to breath.

Slicing, or even using whole, soap made with these pure and natural ingredients works wonders at keeping bugs away. Just pop a soap bar in your drawers and cupboards for a lovely fragrance and to keep them naturally insect free.

Why don't perfumes deter moths & spiders?

'Perfume' can be made up of hundreds of components, many synthetic. Whilst creating some lovely fragrances, the lack of natural properties in most 'parfum' means it is unlikely to have any impact on deterring moths and spiders.
