Traditional Material

Linseed oil has been used across Europe for centuries as a wood preservative and finishing oil. It also forms the basis of many traditional paints, varnishes and protective coatings.

Its simplicity and reliability have made it one of the most widely used natural finishes for wood and porous materials.

NOTE: Boiled linseed oil should be applied in thin coats and allowed to dry fully between applications. Cloths may get hot

Traditional Wood Protection

Boiled linseed oil is a traditional treatment used to nourish and protect wood, cork and porous surfaces. Derived from flax seeds, the oil penetrates deep into the fibres of the material, enhancing the natural grain while providing protection against moisture and dirt.

Unlike surface varnishes that form a hard film, linseed oil soaks into the wood and dries within the fibres themselves. This preserves the natural appearance of the material while allowing it to remain breathable.

For centuries linseed oil has been used to maintain furniture, wooden tools, worktops and architectural timber.

Why Linseed Oil Works

Linseed oil is a drying oil. When exposed to air it slowly oxidises and polymerises, forming a stable protective layer within the wood fibres.

Boiling the oil accelerates this drying process, allowing it to cure more quickly than raw linseed oil. The result is a durable finish that nourishes the material while improving resistance to moisture and wear.

Because the oil penetrates the surface rather than forming a thick coating, treated wood can continue to expand and contract naturally.
