Olives are one of natures wonders and Olive oil, Olive pumice and olive leaf extract are used in many of our French soaps, body and bath products. Olive oil is closer in chemical structure to the skin's natural oil than any other naturally occurring oil and is the perfect moisturiser, especially for dry skin. It has regenerative properties and keeps skin soft and supple. Olive oil is the key ingredient in the world famous Savon de Marseille cubes and liquid soaps and is why these products are so kind and gentle on your skin and are suitable for use on sensitive and problem skin.
Olive Leaf extracts have powerful antisceptic and healing properties; they are anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory as well as having high levels of antioxidants, so an excellent ingredient for handcreams and body lotions. Products made with Olive oil are ideal for dry skin types, leaving your skin soft and silky, it regenerates and nourishes your skin as well as protects.
And another thing - Olive has a great scent; it is fresh with hints of grass, clean smelling. A neutral scent; not floral, citrus, woody or spiced and is an ideal choice for men or women.
If you want to explore the benefits of Olive Oil for your skin why not try the famous Savon de Marseille cubes and Marseille liquid soap both made with Olive Oil? Also handcreams made with Olive Oil and Olive Leaf extract are excellent for hard working hands.
For thousands of years, olive oil has been cherished not just as a culinary staple but as a cornerstone of natural skincare. In regions like Marseille and Provence , it’s more than just an ingredient—it’s a way of life. From traditional soaps to modern moisturizers, olive oil offers a gentle, deeply nourishing approach to cleansing and caring for the skin.
In this article, we’ll explore olive oil’s historical roots, skin benefits, applications in soap and skincare, and its celebrated role in Provençal culture.
Few ingredients are as closely tied to Mediterranean culture as olive oil. Celebrated for its flavour, health benefits, and skin-nourishing properties, olive oil has been used in soapmaking for over 2,000 years.
At Frenchsoaps.co.uk, we are proud to offer Olive Oil Soaps and authentic Savon de Marseille, continuing a tradition that began in ancient Greece and found its pinnacle in Provence.
The earliest records of olive oil soapmaking come from the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used olive oil not only as food but also as a cleansing and moisturising agent. They often combined olive oil with ash to create rudimentary soaps.
As trade expanded through the Mediterranean, soapmaking techniques spread. By the Middle Ages, Marseille — with its abundant access to olive oil and a thriving port — became the perfect centre for soap production.
In the 17th century, King Louis XIV formalised regulations to protect the purity of Marseille soap. It had to be made using 100% vegetable oils, particularly olive oil, without animal fats or artificial additives.

Olive oil soap is beloved for the same reasons it always has been: simplicity, purity, and versatility. Whether used in ancient Greece, medieval Marseille, or modern homes, it embodies natural living and Provençal tradition.
From ancient olive groves to modern Provence, olive oil soap has been a trusted staple for generations. Gentle, natural, and eco-friendly, it represents the best of Mediterranean culture and French craftsmanship.
Bring home the tradition with our range of Olive Oil Soaps at Frenchsoaps.co.uk.
The olive tree (Olea europaea) has been cultivated for over 6,000 years , originating in the Eastern Mediterranean before spreading to Greece, Italy, and France. Ancient Egyptians used olive oil to anoint their skin, Greek athletes massaged it on their bodies before competing, and Romans considered it a luxury cosmetic.
But it’s in Southern France, particularly Marseille, where olive oil’s legacy in soap making was truly cemented. Since the 17th century , the iconic Traditional Savon de Marseille has been crafted using a traditional method that relies on olive oil as a primary fat source, producing a soap renowned for its purity, gentleness, and sustainability.
Olive oil is a core ingredient in Castile soap , Aleppo soap , and Traditional Savon de Marseille . In soap making, it creates a mild, conditioning bar that’s ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive, dry, or irritated skin.
Moisturising : Olive oil is rich in oleic acid and squalene , which help maintain the skin’s lipid barrier.
Non-stripping : It cleans without removing natural oils, leaving skin soft and hydrated.
Gentle for all ages : Suitable for babies, eczema-prone skin, and mature complexions.
Long-lasting : Olive oil produces a solid, slow-melting bar.
In traditional Savon de Marseille , a large cauldron is used to saponify olive oil with soda ash (sodium carbonate), creating a biodegradable, fragrance-free soap often stamped with the words “72% d'huile.” Watch it being made and read more on that here.
Olive oil is not only used in soap—it’s a star in:
Facial oils
Body balms
Lip salves
Cleansing oils
Moisturizers and serums
Its versatility comes from its ability to mimic the skin’s natural sebum , penetrate deeply, and deliver antioxidants where they’re most needed. Learn more about that here.
Vitamin E : A natural antioxidant that protects against free radicals and environmental damage.
Polyphenols : Anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe redness and irritation.
Hydration : Olive oil locks in moisture without clogging pores (non-comedogenic rating: 2).
Skin repair : Supports healing from sun damage, scarring, and dryness.
One of olive oil’s strengths is that it is gentle enough to be used on its own, without added fragrance—making it perfect for sensitive or reactive skin.
Ideal for eczema , psoriasis , rosacea , and children.
Recommended by dermatologists for people with fragrance allergies
Carries a naturally mild, earthy aroma from the oil itself.
Multipurpose, one product does it all.
Blends beautifully with lavender, rosemary, orange blossom, verbena and more.
Popular in Provence, where herbal distilleries inspire regional scents
Allow for creativity and interpretation.
Still gentle on the skin where no allergies are present.
Many Provençal artisans offer both versions to suit different preferences and skin types.
While rare, some individuals may be sensitive to oleic acid in high concentrations, which can disrupt the skin barrier in certain cases. However, olive oil is generally well-tolerated and often recommended by dermatologists as a base for gentle cleansing and hydration .
Always look at the quality and sourcing of ingredients, whilst this may be difficult at product level, it should be transparent at brand level. Look for unrefined, extra virgin olive oil, or/and Organic in skincare products—it retains more nutrients and won't be chemically treated at source.
For acne-prone skin, pair olive oil with balancing oils like jojoba or tea tree in small amounts.
Verify that whilst the soap may be labelled 'olive oil', does it actually contain 'Olive Oil' as a principle ingredient. We've actually seen some Olive Oil' soaps that don't contain olive oil, they contain olive oil perfume!!
Avoid heavily perfumed “olive oil soaps” that probably contain dyes and perfume (these, depending upon their level of 'manufacture' are ok for non sensitive types).
In Marseille , olive oil isn’t just skincare—it’s a tradition. The Savonneries of Marseille continue to produce soap using ancient methods passed down through generations.
Traditionally made from 100% olive oil or blended with coprah oil (coconut oil) for lather
Requires two weeks of 'baking' to create a dense, long-lasting bar
Stamped with “ Savon de Marseille ” to signify authenticity
Often comes in large cubes or liquid soap bottles with a minimalist design
In Provence , olive oil soap reflects the region’s love of lavender fields , olive groves, and slow living . Artisan soapmakers often infuse their creations with regional botanicals and package them in beautifully illustrated wrappers, making them a sensory as well as a skincare experience.

Face : Gently cleanse in the morning and evening. Follow with a light toner and facial oil if needed.
Body : Use bar soap daily in the bath or shower. Olive oil liquid soap is perfect for frequent handwashing.
Shaving : Olive oil soap provides enough slip and cushion for shaving all, including, sensitive areas.
Hair: Works as a shampoo for 'normal' hair. Needs rinsing slightly more than a conventional shampoo, loved by those that use it.
Baby care : Use fragrance-free olive oil soap for gentle cleansing of babies’ skin.
Makeup removal : Olive oil-based cleansing oils dissolve makeup while nourishing the skin barrier.
Make Up Brush cleaning: wet the brush, rub through the soap and rinse, repeat as required. Allow to air dry naturally.

Biodegradable
Palm oil-free
Low environmental impact (for our soaps) through local sourcing

Supporting small-batch producers in Provence also sustains local agriculture and protects traditional savoir-faire.
From ancient queens to modern Provençal artisans, olive oil remains one of the most cherished ingredients in natural skincare.
Whether you're choosing a fragrance-free bar for sensitive skin or a botanically infused cleanser with lavender or citrus, olive oil provides timeless, versatile, and effective care.
Its ability to moisturise, soothe, and protect makes it ideal for daily use—and its deep cultural ties to Marseille and Provence add a rich heritage to every lather.
