What is the Marseille Sardine? 🐟

One of Marseille’s most beloved urban legends is the “sardine that blocked the port of Marseille.”

In 1775, a French ship called La Sartine was carrying prisoners back from India. It was accidentally fired upon by a French fort and damaged. When the ship limped into Marseille’s harbor, it blocked the port temporarily.

But over time, the ship’s name — La Sartine — was misheard or joked about as “la sardine”, leading to the humorous claim that a sardine had blocked the entire harbor.

This story became a running joke and symbol of Marseillais exaggeration, often used to poke fun at how people from Marseille supposedly embellish their tales.

Marseille sardines are a beloved ingredient in Provençal cooking — often grilled, preserved in olive oil, or served with crusty bread and aioli.

You’ll find sardines in art, posters, decorative tins, soaps, and souvenirs all over Marseille. It’s part of the visual and commercial identity of the city.

From sardine-shaped soaps to cheeky postcards, the sardine has become a playful mascot of local pride and a popular symbol for tourists.

• Born and raised in Marseille, Sardo (also spelled Sardo Marsiho) grew up near the Old Port, drawing and sketching from early childhood. 

• His defining moment came in Montreal, where he transformed the word “Marseille” into a fish-like doodle. That initial sardine sketch went on to become the first iteration of his signature work: the “Sardine of Marseille,” showcasing Marseille’s name as skeletal lettering within a stylized sardine body .

• Since then, Sardo has developed the sardine motif into a larger-than-life public sculpture, including a colossal 30-meter-long sardine atop a residential building near Boulevard Tellène in Marseille.
