  • Are Fragranced French Soaps Marseille Soap?

    Fragranced bars are often described as Marseille soap or Provence soap, but they are not the same as Traditional Marseille Soap. Traditional Marseille Soap is unfragranced and defined by its ingredients and method of production. France also has a much wider tradition of fragranced vegetable-oil soaps, made in Marseille, Provence and elsewhere, in an enormous choice of scents, sizes and formulations. It is these soaps that you will find in this collection.

  • What Are Fragranced French Soap Bars Made From?

    These are vegetable-oil soaps made without sulphates or synthetic foaming agents. They clean effectively but do not produce the abundant foam of a shower gel or sulphate-based wash. Formulations differ between makers: some bars contain shea butter, olive oil, goat’s milk or botanical ingredients, while others are all about a particularly good fragrance or an unusual shape.   • How Do I Choose a French Fragranced Soap?

    Begin with a fragrance you already enjoy, or decide whether you would prefer something floral, fresh and green, citrus, fruity, warm or woody. You can filter the collection by fragrance, maker, ingredient and bar size. We have specialised in French soap since 2012 and know the differences between the makers — who does a particularly good rose, which lavender is strongest and which fragrances are much softer than their names suggest. If you are unsure, ask us; choosing soap is one of the things we are very good at.
