Washing Up with Marseille Soap

For generations, Marseille soap has been used far beyond personal washing. In many households it served as a universal cleaning soap — suitable for laundry, dishes and general household cleaning.

The effectiveness of soap in the kitchen comes from its ability to dissolve fats. Cooking oils and food residues that cling to plates, pans and utensils are naturally broken down by soap and lifted into the washing water, allowing them to rinse away cleanly.

Traditional Savon de Marseille is produced by slowly saponifying vegetable oils in large cauldrons, a process that has remained largely unchanged since the eighteenth century. The resulting soap is simple, stable and highly effective as a cleaning agent.

Modern washing-up liquids and dish soaps based on Marseille soap build on this same principle. While the format has evolved, the underlying cleaning chemistry remains the same: a vegetable oil soap capable of dissolving grease without unnecessary additives.

Solid dishwashing soaps, Marseille soap liquids and traditional dishwasher powders all reflect different ways of applying this simple cleaning approach in today’s kitchens.

For households seeking reliable, well-understood cleaning formulations, Marseille soap continues to offer a practical alternative to many modern detergent products.
