Savon de Marseille is proper soap.
The same bar can be used for washing, laundry and household cleaning in the way soap has been used for generations. Its versatility is not an added feature; it is the natural consequence of its simplicity. Savon de Marseille is made by saponifying vegetable oils with soda and water, without fragrance, colour or cosmetic additives. Most modern products are designed for a single task. Savon de Marseille is precisely the opposite — it was never specialised.
Its usefulness extends far beyond basic washing. Marseille soap has long been relied upon for practical tasks ranging from stain removal and fabric care to soothing insect bites, easing bruising, deterring moths in wardrobes and even preventing night cramps when placed in bedding.
Authentic Savon de Marseille is recognised by the 72% oils mark stamped into the soap. This refers to the minimum proportion of oils present in the finished soap and has long served as the historic benchmark of proper Marseille soapmaking. In practice, many heritage savonneries consistently produce soaps exceeding this traditional standard, giving Marseille soap its characteristically high oil content. The soap is slowly cooked in large cauldrons over many days before being poured, cut and left to mature. In the warm, dry climate of southern France the bars continue to cure naturally, forming the dense, long-lasting structure that defines Savon de Marseille.
For many people, using Savon de Marseille for the first time is simply a rediscovery of what soap was always meant to be.
