A Traditional Household Staple
Bicarbonate of soda has been used in household cleaning for generations because it is stable, versatile and inexpensive. Its ability to clean, deodorise and regulate pH means a single product can perform many everyday tasks around the home.
For this reason it remains one of the most widely used mineral cleaning materials in traditional household cleaning.
Note: When used as a scouring powder, apply with a damp cloth or sponge rather than dry powder to avoid scratching delicate surfaces.
Bicarbonate of soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate or baking soda, is a simple mineral compound long used for household cleaning, deodorising and fabric care.
When dissolved in water it produces a mildly alkaline solution that helps loosen grease, neutralise acidic odours and soften washing water. Its fine crystalline structure also provides a gentle abrasive action, making it useful for cleaning sinks, surfaces and cookware without scratching.
Because of these properties, bicarbonate of soda has traditionally been used throughout the home for laundry care, kitchen cleaning and odour control.
Why Bicarbonate Works
Sodium bicarbonate is a mild alkali with a pH of around 8.3. In cleaning applications it performs several useful roles.
It can help loosen grease and dirt by mildly raising the pH of water. It also reacts with acidic compounds that cause many household odours, helping neutralise smells rather than simply masking them.
The powder itself has a very fine texture, allowing it to act as a gentle abrasive suitable for cleaning sinks, hobs and other hard surfaces.
