A Traditional Cleaning Material
Although widely used in modern cleaning products, citric acid has long been valued for its ability to dissolve mineral deposits and preserve food. Its effectiveness, stability and versatility have made it one of the most widely used organic acids in both domestic and industrial applications.
NOTE: Citric acid is not suitable for acid-sensitive materials, including:
• marble and natural stone
• aluminium
• enamel surfaces
• some coloured fabrics
Always rinse thoroughly after use and test on an inconspicuous area first.
Citric acid is a naturally occurring organic acid widely used for descaling household appliances, removing mineral deposits and restoring shine to kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
When dissolved in water it forms a mildly acidic solution capable of dissolving calcium and magnesium salts responsible for limescale. For this reason citric acid is particularly effective for cleaning kettles, coffee machines, taps, shower screens and other surfaces exposed to hard water.
Produced through the fermentation of plant sugars, citric acid remains one of the most widely used acids in household cleaning and food preparation.
Why Citric Acid Works
Citric acid has strong chelating properties, meaning it binds to mineral salts such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals form the hard deposits commonly known as limescale.
When citric acid dissolves in water it breaks down these deposits, allowing them to dissolve and rinse away. This makes it especially useful for descaling appliances and removing mineral residues left by hard water.
Because it is a relatively mild acid, citric acid can clean effectively without the harsh fumes or corrosive properties associated with stronger mineral acids.
