The Formulation
Olive Oil
Olive oil forms the historic foundation of Marseille soap. Naturally rich in oleic acid, it produces a mild, stable lather and contributes to a firm, long-wearing bar with notable skin tolerance. In traditional olive-based formulations, it defines both the structure and the character of the finished soap.
INCI: Sodium Olivate
Ingredients
Sodium Olivate, Sodium Cocoate, Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide

Fer a Cheval Marseille soaps contain traces of glycerin resulting from Natural process; glycerin is not added to the soap. After cooking and numerous rinses, only a tiny amount remains. New cosmetics regulations require that all ingredients, even in trace amounts, be listed in the ingredients list.

This soap may undergo colour variations depending on exposure to light and humidity.
Fragrance Classification

Fragrance-Free
No fragrance, essential oils or fragrance-derived components are used.

Individuals with sensitivities should review the full ingredient list before use.

Use & Suitability

For machine washing: in a 2L recovery can, dissolve 60g of shavings in 1L of very hot water. Shake. Let stand for 24 hours. Mix the resulting lye again and add 1L of cold water. Stir it all together. You can add bicarbonate of soda, essential oils to perfume it and/or white vinegar as a softener. Pour 100ml of the liquid obtained directly into your machine. Shake the resulting detergent before each use.
For hand washing: dissolve 10g of shavings in very hot water in a basin and leave the laundry

Fragrance-free, colour-free and preservative-free, Fer à Cheval's Pure Olive Soap Flakes are made solely from saponified olive oil. A simple, hypoallergenic traditional formulation with nothing added.

They won't bubble and lather in the same way as soap flakes containing coconut or palm oil. Pure olive soap is naturally low-foaming and provides a gentle wash, making these a particularly good choice for delicate laundry.

The biodegradable flakes can be used for both machine and hand washing, including in homes with septic tanks. We recommend making them into a liquid in advance and storing it ready to use.

Simply dissolve 20–30g of flakes in 2 litres of boiling water and leave to cool. As a starting point, use around 50ml for a standard wash and see how you get on. For particularly dirty laundry or larger loads, you may want to use a little more.

Use for everyday clothing, bedding and household linens, as well as more delicate laundry. Traditional Savon de Marseille has long been used for washing delicate fabrics including silk and lace, and for the care of antique and heirloom linens too. With no added fragrance, they are also a good choice for baby clothes and anyone who prefers their laundry unfragranced.

For most everyday washing, use the soap liquid on its own. For stains or particularly dirty laundry, we recommend treating the stain before washing rather than simply adding more soap.

You can also combine Marseille soap with traditional laundry ingredients such as bicarbonate of soda or soda crystals, depending on what you're washing. We cover when — and when not — to use these in our Laundry Guide.

And they're not just for laundry. Dissolved in water, the flakes make a useful household soap and can also be used to mop your floor, as the base for homemade washing-up liquid and other cleaning products.
The flakes themselves are the pieces of soap created when the traditional cubes and bars are cut to size, so nothing is wasted. If you buy one of our larger Marseille soap formats to cut at home, keep the crumbles too — they can be dissolved and used in exactly the same way. You can also grate a cube or bar to make your own flakes; plenty of our customers find grating Marseille soap strangely therapeutic, while others would much rather we did the work for them!

Made in Marseille by Fer à Cheval

Fer à Cheval has been making soap in Marseille since 1856 and is one of the city's surviving traditional soap factories. These flakes are made using the traditional Marseille process, cooking the soap in cauldrons under the supervision of the Maître Savonnier, and are certified ECOCERT Ecodetergent.

Why is our recipe different to the packet?

In France, soap flakes are often made into a more concentrated laundry gel. We prefer a thinner liquid because we find it dissolves and distributes more reliably through a full machine load, particularly with the harder water found in many parts of the UK and the cooler temperatures we tend to wash at day to day.

    Did no gel

I made up this as a laundry detergent as instructed but the liquid has not turned to a gel. It has been 4 days now and I can see what looks like flakes at bottom half of litre jar. I used very hot water from a tap.......was this the problem rather than boiling water?

    Good morning Rosalyn
Sorry to read you have had issues with the flakes. Yes, you do need boiling water and to stir vigorously initially then keep stirring until they are fully discolved. It doesn't take long if the water is boiling.
You can still use the solution you have made, stir first though. Next time use water from the kettle or saucepan.

The product came with a very helpful leaflet explaining all the ways the product could be used .. so I will definitely be buying g again and can’t wait to try the black liquid soap

A small amount goes a long way! Made 2L of liquid detergent out of the 20g of flakes and did a great job at cleaning the clothes.

    Lovely clean smell

I'm still learning the right way to prepare this as a laundry liquid. I had read different instructions online about using hot water and stirring it, leaving it overnight and it gels up. However, when I followed the instructions on the back of the bag (20g flakes to 1 litre hot water), the solution did not gel up; it did, however, clean my clothes well. I've really enjoyed how fresh the laundry comes out. I do with there was a way to amplify and add this glorious clean aroma, but I'm not sure it's possible to capture the natural clean into the format of a scent booster. To that end, I am still using scent booster beads, but I ran a wash of towels with just this, some vinegar and some baking soda, and the towels just smelt fresh, with no odours. I'm still figuring out the right recipe for everything, but I really enjoy these flakes.

I've been reading other reviews on similar products and it seems like a lot of people do not go back after converting to soap flake wash. I feel like I'm genuinely being pulled in this direction. I still have oxygen bleach for my brights. I haven't ventured into a white wash with this yet, but I think it is only a matter of time before I do. :)
